Ryan Garcia Announces Conor Benn Is Next And It Just Got Personal

How It Went Down On Jimmy Fallon

Garcia was electric on the show, building the drama before finally revealing his opponent. When he got to the name he did not hold back on why this one means more than just a title defence.

Benn confronted Garcia at an awards show two years ago, with Garcia's wife present. Garcia described Benn pressing up on him and grabbing him, and made clear that moment has been sitting with him ever since. His exact words: "It's a little personal. I'm going to really put a whopping on this man and we will send him back to the UK sipping on some tea."

This is not just a world title fight. There is genuine bad blood here, and that changes everything about how this build-up is going to look.

The Road To This Fight

Garcia won the WBC welterweight title in February, dropping Mario Barrios in the opening round before cruising to a wide unanimous decision victory. It was a statement performance from a fighter who had bounced back from a shock loss to Rolando Romero in 2025 and had a point to prove to the boxing world.

Benn, meanwhile, has been on a remarkable journey of his own. After losing to Chris Eubank Jr in April 2025 in what many called the fight of the year, he came back seven months later and avenged that defeat convincingly, dropping Eubank twice in the final round. He then signed a multi-year deal with Zuffa Boxing, left Eddie Hearn's Matchroom stable, and made his Zuffa debut against former super-lightweight world champion Regis Prograis at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April, winning by unanimous decision and calling out Garcia the moment the final bell rang.

Garcia answered immediately. "I'm down. Garcia vs Benn. Let's do it."

Now, just weeks later, it is confirmed and the date is set.

Why This Fight Is Massive

Two young, loud, heavy-handed, marketable fighters with a genuine grudge. A world title on the line. Las Vegas on a huge night in September. This fight has pay-per-view written all over it.

Garcia brings the biggest social media following in boxing and an American fanbase that is completely devoted to him. Benn brings one of the most passionate UK fanbases in the sport, a record of 25 wins and just one loss, and a story that resonates deeply. The son of British boxing legend Nigel Benn, Conor has spent his entire career trying to step out of his father's enormous shadow and carve out his own legacy. A world title win in Las Vegas would do exactly that.

Benn is ranked number one by the WBC at welterweight, making this a mandatory defence for Garcia. But make no mistake, this is not just a routine title defence. This is the biggest welterweight fight that can be made right now.

One important note — as of the time of writing this fight has not been formally confirmed by Golden Boy or Zuffa Boxing. Garcia has a history of announcing fights before contracts are fully signed. The date, the opponent, and the location have all been stated publicly and negotiations are well underway, but the official announcement is still to come. Watch this space.

The Storylines That Will Define The Build-Up

America vs Britain Garcia is from California and fights for America. Benn is London born and bred, the son of one of Britain's greatest ever fighters. The transatlantic rivalry writes itself and will dominate the build-up from the first press conference to the final bell.

The Grudge That awards show incident is going to be brought up every single week between now and September. Garcia has made it personal. Benn will have something to say back. This is exactly the kind of build-up that sells fights and fills arenas.

The Weight Question Benn has not fought at the welterweight limit of 147lbs since April 2022. His fight with Prograis in April was at a 150lb catchweight. Coming down to 147 is a genuine challenge and one of the key questions surrounding his chances against Garcia. Can Benn make the weight and still carry his power? That question will dominate fight week.

The Canelo Factor September 12 is the same night Canelo Alvarez fights Christian Mbilli in Riyadh. Two massive boxing events on the same night means the sport gets a huge moment. Garcia and his team clearly believe they can hold their own against that competition and that is a statement of confidence in itself.

What Both Fighters Said

Garcia on Jimmy Fallon: "We are fighting September 12, in Vegas. His name is Conor Benn. He's talking a lot. He's talking crazy. He actually confronted me at an awards show, my wife was there. So it's a little personal."

Garcia to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith earlier the same day: "Now that I have this piece that I was kind of missing, I would love to keep fighting, carry boxing, and lead this generation of young fighters. I have all the opportunities to become the face of boxing but now I just have to prove it."

Benn after beating Prograis in April: "September. Let's go. Any day of the week. Twice on Sundays. Garcia, you're next. Keep my belt warm."
